Jorge Luis Mazo, the parish priest of Bella Vista, and Iñigo Egiluz, a cooperant of Paz y Tercer Mundo, were helping the communities and people of the Atrato (Colombia) in their fight for their land and their life.
On 18 November 1999, the boat where both were travelling on a humanitarian mission was attacked by a paramilitary group. Iñigo and Jorge were killed. In his last letter, Iñigo had written: "Obviously, our work clashes with the interests of those who want to get hold of the lands in a violent and unscrupulous way".
In January 2001 Iñigo Egiluz was awarded the Cooperante 2000 Prize posthumously by the Basque Government. At the prize-giving ceremony, president of Mundubat Iñaki Markiegi said the beautiful word that the Emberá Indians had dedicated to the young cooperant: "SoKrinchapanabari", that is, "we will remember you and walk on with our hearts".
