Mundubat started working in Nicaragua in 1994, when it set in motion a project related to the economic strengthening of the population demobilised after the war. The Project was undertaken in the Department of Chontales, one of the regions where the impact of the armed conflict was most severe.

 

The activities carried out with the groups of demobilised people allowed us to define our work, and we extended it to other social sectors. Since then, our line of work has consisted in bringing about elements that enable the socioeconomic development of the most vulnerable sectors. The basic principles of Mundubat's work are the following: the improvement of the conditions of autonomous and self-managed work; the strengthening of rural and urban organisational networks; the promotion of citizens' participation; the defence of particularly subordinated groups in local power relations, such as women.

 

This commitment to development has been fulfilled even in the areas struck by natural disasters, such as the region affected by Hurricane Mitch in 1998. The men and women of El Viejo and Malacatoya proved that the hurricane took away their houses, but not their dignity and their hope to build a better future.
